Top Tips for Making Scented Candles

Scented candles are characteristically crowd-pleasing since they can fill a room with your favourite scent. It might explain why scented candles have become popular in homes and commercial facilities. In fact, it is easy to find a scented candle for any occasion or setting. That said, you need a careful approach when making scented candles because missteps can be quite costly. This article highlights tips for making scented candles.

Make a Small Test Candle

Making scented candles is like cooking a spicy dish. Some spices do not go well together, and sometimes it is all about trial and error. Therefore, when making candles with customised scents, the last thing you want is to make several pieces only to realise that the fragrances do not work well. You can avoid such waste by making a small test candle with the fragrances of choice. A test piece gives you an idea of how well different fragrance combinations work. Some people avoid the step because of the perception that it might take a bit of time. However, it is not the case because making a small test candle only takes a few minutes. You can make the process much easier by having your preferred fragrance combinations ready.

Thoroughly Mix Fragrance Oil With Wax

Just because bee wax and soy wax work well with fragrance oil does not mean that you can get away with lacklustre mixing. If you do not mix oils and melted wax thoroughly, the chances are high that fragrance will escape from wax after cooling. It is dangerous because fragrance oil can react with a burning flame and start a fire. Therefore, you need to mix wax and oil carefully. You can use an electric whisk, but you should only do so while the wax is still warm. It ensures that fragrance oil mixes with the wax excellently.

Use Natural Wax Sources

Although paraffin wax is the cheapest, it can be pretty expensive if you insist on mixing it with fragrance oils. The reason is that paraffin wax releases some volatile organic compounds when burning, which can affect the candle scent. It means that some of the candles you make will not smell right, which leads to waste. The good news is that you cannot go wrong with natural waxes such as soy and bee wax primarily because they are odourless. Therefore, their scent is not affected as a candle burns.
